Red Apple Group

Red Apple Group is the empire of the Greece-born, New York-raised John Catisimatidis, who made his fortune through the Gristedes grocery chain. Through its real estate arm, Red Apple Real Estate, Catsimatidis owns and invests in property in New York City and several other markets.

Its holdings in New York as of 2021 included a 33-story residential tower at 86 Fleet Street in Downtown Brooklyn, and two 21-story rental towers on the Coney Island waterfront, called Ocean Dream, both developed over the past two years. The company also has residential holdings in Fort Greene and Downtown Brooklyn.

That’s in addition to its retail holdings, including some Gristedes locations like the former Gristedes grocery store at 71 South End Ave.

Catsimatidis, who also owns an energy company, runs a radio show, and bought a stake in flailing rival grocery brand D’Agostino in 2016, is also active in politics. He ran for mayor in 2013 as a Republican, eyed a mayoral run in 2017, and is considering another go at it for 2021.
