Empire State Realty Trust is a real estate investment trust based in Manhattan and best-known for owning the Empire State Building at East 34th Street and Fifth Avenue. It also owns eight other office buildings in Midtown, including 250 West 57th Street, 1400 Broadway, One Grand Central Place, 111 West 33rd Street and 1350 Broadway.

The ownership and management company, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange as ESRT, also owns five office properties in Connecticut’s Fairfield County and New York’s Westchester County as well as five retail addresses in Manhattan and Westport, Conn.

ESRT grew out of the real estate holdings of the Malkin family—again, most famously, the Empire State Building—which were owned and managed under Wien & Malkin, W&H Properties and Malkin Holdings, among other entities. Peter Malkin and son Anthony Malkin launched ESRT in 2011, and began selling shares in it in 2013, after a sometimes spirited back and forth with other stakeholders regarding going public.

The younger Malkin is ESRT’s chairman, president and chief executive; and the senior Malkin serves as chairman emeritus. The REIT remains one of the most visible and active players in the New York-area commercial real estate market, with major leases and investments.

The REIT has also positioned itself as a sustainability leader among commercial real estate owners and operators. That began even before the 2011 founding of ESRT, with a major retrofitting of the Empire State Building to cut its carbon emissions.
