Shakespeare & Co. Opening Outpost in Brookfield Place

Longtime New York City booksellers, Shakespeare & Co., will open its fifth outpost inside Brookfield Place next year, landlord Brookfield Property Partners announced today.
Shakespeare & Co. inked a deal for a 2,300-square-foot store on the second-floor of the retail courtyard of Brookfield Place, which has an address of 230 Vesey Street, Brookfield said. Aside from selling books, the location—set to open in January 2020—will have a café and plans to open weekly in-store book talks.
A spokeswoman for the landlord declined to provide the asking rent and length of the lease.
“Shakespeare & Co. is a perfect fit for Brookfield Place,” Michael Goldban, the head of retail leasing at Brookfield, said in a statement. “We love their unique blend of programming and offerings and anticipate their store will quickly become a favorite here—especially with anticipated author events both in their store and in our beautiful Winter Garden.”
Brookfield handled the deal in-house while Newmark (NMRK) RKF’s Caleb Petersen represented Shakespeare & Co. A spokeswoman for RKF declined to comment.
Shakespeare & Co. started in 1983 with an Upper East Side location at 939 Lexington Avenue and eventually grew to have six locations around the city, according to Publishers Weekly. The stores eventually shuttered until only the Upper East Side outpost remained when it was bought out by On Demand Books in 2015 with plans to turn it into a national chain, Publishers Weekly reported.
It opened an Upper West Side location at 2020 Broadway in November 2018 and one in Philadelphia in the summer of 2018. Shakespeare & Co. also plans to return to Greenwich Village with a bookshop at 450 Avenue of the Americas later this year.
