Blockbuster Philly-based restaurateur Stephen Starr (Buddakan, Morimoto) has submitted a liquor license application to Community Board 2 for a restaurant at 222 Bowery.
The site, which was the first modern branch of the YMCA and later a redoubt of New York bohemians including William Burroughs, currently houses environmentally-friendly retailer Green Depot.
With his latest restaurant, Mr. Starr would team up with Joe Carroll, the trendy Williamsburg restaurateur behind BBQ joint Fette Sau and the steakhouse St. Anselm. The pair have already teamed up on a Fette Sau offshoot in Philadelphia.
Representatives of Starr Restaurants confirmed to eater that the prolific Mr. Starr was eying the space and that the organization was not planning another BBQ spot. The address is next to the popular and well-received Pearl & Ash restaurant.
