Ghurka, the 35-year-old purveyor of fine leather luggage and bags, this week signed a deal to move its flagship to the Sherry Netherland at 781 Fifth Avenue, brokers said. The deal will allow the high-end leather brand to occupy 915 square feet on the hotel’s ground floor and an additional 225 square feet of basement space.
The location, which will supplent Ghurka’s flagship at The Plaza Retail Collection, was not accidental, brokers said. The large crowds of bag-toting tourists who regularly spill into nearby Central Park will no doubt take advantage of the company’s high-end bags.
“Ghurka is a prominent luxury brand that has been associated with one of Manhattan’s most recognizable hotels,” said Rob Cohen of Robert K. Futterman & Associates, who represented the landlord, The Sherry-Netherland, in the deal. “This new and highly visible Fifth Avenue location will offer the retailer access to year-round shoppers and a distinguished street presence among other major co-tenants that include Cipriani and Domenico Vacca.”
Along with Mr. Cohen, Peter Whitenack and Jackie Totolo, also of RKF, represented the landlord. Steven Orfali of the Orfali Group represented Ghurka in the transaction.
