Gym chain Planet Fitness is opening its first location in Long Island City, Commercial Observer has learned.
The fitness brand signed a lease for 18,271 square feet at Alta, a 43-story rental tower at 29-22 Northern Boulevard. The space spans 4,375 square feet on the ground floor of the new development and includes 13,896 square feet of basement space, according to information from Winick Realty Group, which brokered the transaction.
Alta, developed by Simon Baron Development and Quadrum Global, is a mixed-use building with 467 residential units, some of which are co-living suites managed by Ollie. The project includes roughly 36,000 square feet of retail and is already open to residential tenants. The gym plans to open in 2020.
Winick’s Steven Baker and Thomas Galo, who are marketing the building’s retail, represented the landlord, while Richard Chera of Crown Acquisitions represented Planet Fitness. “It’s a great amenity, not only for the building but for the surrounding community and Long Island City overall,” Galo said.
Galo and Baker have also leased space to a dental office and Playhouse Daycare, leaving 15,722 square feet of ground-floor retail in the building still available for lease, according to Winick. Asking rent at the building is $65 per square foot.
Winick declined to provide the length of the lease term.
Alta is located near the intersection of Northern Boulevard and Queens Boulevard, close to the Queens Plaza subway station.
