reprintsIt’s been a very bad week for the children of New York real estate professionals. Local media outlets have kept busy with a series of stories about heroin and hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD) busts befalling the descendants of real estate moguls, brokers and crane operators.
Yesterday, the Daily News reported that Kathryn Kalikow was arrested in the Bronx on Sunday night during a heroin “buy-and-bust.” Ms. Kalikow, 28, and her boyfriend, Brian Whalen, had been peddling their wares on Craigslist. She is the daughter of Peter Kalikow, the president of the real estate firm H.J. Kalikow & Company, former commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and, from 1988 to 1994, the owner and publisher of the New York Post.
The Post reported very early this morning that James Lomma Jr., the 22-year-old son of “crane magnate” James Lomma, was nabbed with heroin on Staten Island and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drug possession. It was his second drug bust in six months. The elder Mr. Lomma last year was acquitted on manslaughter charges stemming from a 2008 crane collapse on the Upper East Side that killed two people. Mr. Lomma, Jr. will be sentenced on May 7th.
Finally, the current issue of New York magazine includes a lengthy piece on Aaron Greene and Morgan Gliedman, the young couple whose Greenwich Village apartment police raided last December on a tip. The NYPD discovered seven grams of the explosive chemical HMTD, two shotguns, ammunition and several anarchist cookbooks. Ms. Gliedman, 27, a Dalton graduate and Wellesley dropout, is the daughter of Douglas Elliman agent Susyn Schops Gliedman.
