Sam Chang of McSam Hotel Group is seeking a demolition permit from the city’s Department of Buildings at 334 West 36th Street, according to DOB records dated yesterday.

Mr. Chang said he tapped architect Gene Kaufman to design a limited-service hotel for the site, which is between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, but he doesn’t yet know the brand. It will likely have 500 rooms and exceed 20 stories, Mr. Chang said, after he purchases additional air rights from the Hudson Yards Development Corporation. The hotel will include a breakfast area, he noted, but not a full restaurant.

The hotel developer bought 334 West 36th Street from the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health for $50.8 million in the summer, as Commercial Observer previously reported. The center, which provides mental health treatment, housing, job training and placement as well as case management services, had the right to occupy the premises until next year, but has already moved out, Mr. Chang said.

The new hotel will likely open in 2018.
