Frank Gehry to Design Facebook’s New Offices at 770 Broadway

reprintsA-list starchitect Frank Gehry will team up with Facebook on the design of the social media kingpin’s “big,” “open” and “cozy” new offices at 770 Broadway in New York.
Mr. Gehry is currently working with Facebook on the expansion of its Menlo Park, California headquarters. The 100,000-square-foot Village office will share certain elements–collaborative spaces, an uncluttered floor plan, an abundance of white boards and videoconferencing rooms–with the West Coast mothership but, per an announcement by Facebook’s New York engineering team site director Serkan Piantino, also “be distinctly Big Apple in design.”
Crain’s reported yesterday that Facebook will pay in the mid-$70s per square foot range for its two-floor space in Vornado‘s roughly 1.1-million-square-foot tower. J. Crew is one high profile neighbor, and the headline-grabbing 51 Astor Place is across the street. Fellow tech titan Google at one point flirted with the property.
Mr. Gehry might be best known in New York for his work at lower Manhattan’s residential high-rise 8 Spruce Street, a striking example of his trademark corrugated steel template. Facebook plans to move into 770 Broadway in early 2014. It already has a Manhattan presence at 335 Madison Avenue.
Representatives from Gehry Partners and Facebook did not immediately return a phone call and emails requesting comment.
