reprintsIt turns out the rumors of a New York Health & Racquet Club opening in a large space in Alphabet City were slightly off the mark. Instead, a New York Sports Club will occupy 21,262 square feet above the popular Gracefully deli at 28-30 Avenue A. Documents filed with Community Board 3 divulge plans for a “Physical Cultural Establishment” on the second through fifth floors of the five-story commercial building.
The property stands out thanks to the vertical marquee reading Burger Klein, the furniture company that occupied the 142-year-old building starting in 1939. Earlier this year, EV Grieve reported that the city in 2011 approved plans to turn the residential building into a mixed-use commercial and residential property. That project stalled. Now, the physical culture establishment NYSC is on CB3’s Land Use, Zoning, Public and Private Housing Committee docket for May 8.
