Alix Curtin comes from a family of real estate professionals, but she hadn’t planned to join the industry herself. During her senior year at College of the Holy Cross, she applied to law schools with the expectation of studying international law. A chance conversation with her uncle, however, turned her on to the possibility of a job in real estate. He connected Curtin with his former boss, Paul Massey, founding partner and CEO of B6. After an interview, Curtin was invited to join the firm.

Two years later, Curtin is a member of B6 Director Brian Whelan’s team, focusing on investment sales in Upper Manhattan. What with the global pandemic and all, it hasn’t been the easiest time to launch a career, but Curtin has managed to notch a number of significant deals, including the $6.6 million sale last year of 26-34 Sherman Avenue, a development site of 40,000 buildable square feet in Fort George. In April she brokered the sale of a 2,000-square-foot commercial condo at 721 Saint Nicholas Avenue in Hamilton Heights for $1 million.

“Between COVID and the rent laws being passed just before I joined [B6], I was definitely not joining at an ideal time for the real estate industry,” Curtin said. “But I think it has definitely taught me a lot about how hard you have to work to get a deal done.”

And things are looking up.

“We’ve been having a busy past couple of months,” she said. “We’ve been extremely active with new listings and putting deals under contract.”

Law school, meanwhile, will have to wait — quite possibly for the duration. “It was unexpected and not planned, but I’m really happy things worked out the way they did,” Curtin said. “I don’t see myself in another industry. I think I’ll be in real estate for a while.”—A.B.
