The city of Miami Gardens, Fla., this week approved a land lease that sets up the development of a 127-room hotel on city-owned land near Hard Rock Stadium.
The proposal calls for a 127-room hotel, the Beckham Hotel Miami Gardens, and a parking garage on part of a 3.5-acre parcel. The hotel – no brand affiliation has been announced yet – and parking garage will be adjacent to a new performing arts center the city plans at the same site.
The Beckham in question is not related to soccer star David Beckham. The project is led by Phillip L. Beckham III, a Black developer from Chicago. The city of Miami Gardens, population 116,115, is 59 percent Black, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
“We invest in communities that look like us,” Beckham told the City Council during a meeting this week.
The Miami Gardens’ City Council voted unanimously to approve a lease of city-owned vacant property at 18600 Northwest 25th Avenue to P3 Markets and Beckham Hospitality.
The deal calls for the developer to pay the city about $18.6 million in rent over the 50-year lease.
City documents said the new hotel would be part of a larger project that includes a second hotel and a performing arts center with a 1,200-seat theater.
The site is two miles from Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins, the University of Miami Hurricanes, the annual Orange Bowl, a Formula 1 race and the Miami Open tennis tournament. Billionaire Stephen Ross owns that property and the Dolphins.
