Local Developer Plans to Build a School at 1000 University Avenue in the Bronx

School is in session in the Bronx, or at least it will be. 

Kiumarz Geula, principal of real estate development firm Pillar Property Management, has filed plans with the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) to build a seven-story school building at 1000 University Avenue in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx.

The plans were filed with the DOB on Aug. 5. Geula did not immediately respond to Commercial Observer’s request for comment. Jonathan Imani of IMC Architecture, the registered architect on the project, also did not immediately respond to CO’s request for comment. 

The DOB plans have few details about the scope of the work coming to the vacant Bronx property. The plans call for the construction of a 64,366-square-foot, 108-foot tall building with a cafeteria and recreation space. No other details are available. 

Pillar Property Management isn’t the only developer planning to bring a new school building to the Bronx. In June, Apex Development Group and Knickpoint Ventures secured a $60 million debt package to acquire and build a charter school at 1780 East Tremont Avenue, Commercial Observer reported at the time. 

Ripco Real Estate’s James Murad, who arranged the financing for that deal, told CO at the time that the project reflects “the growing demand for high-quality educational facilities in underserved communities and the continued appeal of mission-driven real estate investments.”
