International firm of mystery Winston & Strawn has stealthily signed one of the year’s largest leases.

The corporate law firm, which has 14 offices around the globe, has renewed and expanded to 280,000 square feet in the Metlife building, the Post‘s Steve Cuozzo reports.

Adding another touch of mystery, Mr. Cuozzo couldn’t reach any of the parties involved on a wintry Monday evening. He wrote that the term is “understood” to be for 15 years.

The firm, whose clients include Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Ernst & Young and Wachovia, has apparently slid right through the recession, and plans to expand its current 180-person New York office. The lease, though large, comes in well behind Societe Generale’s 442,000-square-foot deal at nearby 245 Park Avenue. Fellow law firm Proskauer Rose took a 400,000-square-foot behemoth at 11 Times Square this year.

Winston & Strawn was represented by Mitchell Steir, John Mambrino and Matthew Barlow of Studley. Landlord Tishman Speyer handled the negotiations in-house.
