The facade is going up at The Green Manufacturing Center at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the site of abandoned former ship manufacturing buildings 128, 123 and 28. It will resemble the old facade with its glass and metal components.

“We are removing the facade from the building,” said Michael Gabbay, a senior vice president at Plaza Construction, the construction management firm overseeing the project. “We are adding steel where necessary and recladding.”

The building is in need of an upgrade after being abandoned decades ago. As is the case with all new buildings at the Yard, 128, 123 and 28 will be LEED certified.

Multiple tenants will occupy the 220,000-square-foot complex. Crye Precision, a body-armor and apparel manufacturer for the U.S. military, and Macro Sea, a real estate developer, have signed leases with the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, the not-for-profit corporation that manages the compound.

The roughly $50 million Green Manufacturing Center is part of the 300-acre industrial park on the Brooklyn waterfront, which is home to more than 275 businesses.

Construction started on The Green Manufacturing Center about a year ago and will be completed next spring, Mr. Gabbay said. In addition to the facade work, the complex will get new infrastructure and communal bathrooms.

“It was a very industrial type of building and it’s now going to be more high-tech in terms of its look so it will have a state-of-the art skin,” Mr. Gabbay said. “They’re trying to make it a high-tech center within the Navy Yard.”
