Gartner Inc. Predicts IP Addresses to Reach 30B by 2020

As consumers use multiple devices, IP addresses are continuing to grow.

Information technology and research firm Gartner Inc. predicts that there will be 30 billion devices with unique IP addresses by 2020. The company announced during an October conference covering technology in Orlando, Fla., that the economic impact of the increased device use will generate $1.9 trillion. The industries expected to benefit the most financially from the growth are health care, retail and transportation.

Gartner-Publishes-2013-Magic-Quadrant-for-SIEM“Digital changes the IT market in a big way through the Internet of Things,” Peter Sondergaard, senior vice president at Gartner and global head of research said. “In the technology and telecom sectors, revenue associated with the Internet of Things will exceed $309 billion per year by 2020.”

Gartner also predicts that mobile devices will dominate the technology industry. By 2017, mobile phones, tablets, ultra mobile PCs and new additions to the segment will make up 80 percent of device spending. In the same year, the company predicts nearly half of all first-time computer purchases will be a tablet. In addition to its research, Gartner organizes its symposium/IT expo in different cities across the globe. Its conferences include top IT industry executives from a variety of companies.
