JFK’s TWA Terminal to Get Hip With Standard Hotel Outpost

If a boutique hotel in the South Bronx wasn’t enough to raise eyebrows, an offshoot of the slick Standard hotel empire at John F. Kennedy International Airport should do the trick.

The New York Post reported yesterday that the Port Authority selected Andre Balazs‘ hotel group to develop JFK’s TWA terminal, the modern architectural triumph masterminded in the late 1950s by Eero Saarinen.

Balazs Properties will bring the 150-room The Standard, Flight Center to the Queens spot, where it will join a new conference center, retail space, spa, fitness center, flight museum and restaurant collection. The Standard currently has two locations apiece in New York (the High Line and the East Village) and Los Angeles (Hollywood and Downtown) in addition to a Miami branch.

The City designated Saarinen’s terminal a historic landmark in 1994. In 2005, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Now known as Terminal 5, it is currently used by JetBlue.
