Privately-held real estate development firm with over $60 billion of development and acquisition activity.

Started in 1972 by Stephen Ross with a $10,000 loan from his mother, Related Housing Companies originally built low- and moderate-income housing nationwide. In the 1980s Related began developing luxury housing and in the early 2000s expanded into the Midwest.

In 2003, Related unveiled the Time Warner Center, a 2.8 million-square-foot mixed-use concept on the site of Columbus Circle’s old New York Coliseum. It featured curated retail, living, hotel and office space, and would serve as a model for Hudson Yards, the project Related would undertake later in the decade, as well as large scale city centers that the company would develop throughout the country.

Related Midwest is currently developing the 78, a 62-acre development in Downtown Chicago with investment in transportation and green space; Related California is in the middle of a 9 acre development called the Grand in Downtown Los Angeles, as well as housing and condominiums in San Francisco, Silicon Valley and L.A. as well as projects in London and Abu Dhabi.

During the Great Recession, Related won the bid to build Hudson Yards, a 28-acre, 18 million-square-foot complex on the old Hudson Rail Yards on Manhattan’s Far West Side. The first phase opened in 2019. Its second phase was under construction as of fall 2020.
