The first image one sees on the Rudin Management Company website is that of Dock 72, the company’s joint venture with Boston Properties and WeWork at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Emblematic of Rudin Management’s longtime commitment to technology-rich development, the Dock 72 project was led by Executive Vice President Michael Rudin.

After some initial leasing challenges at Dock 72, BXP and Rudin have signed more than 120,000 square feet of leases over the past 12 months, including Food52, Huge, Melange and Small Planet. All four firms will be bringing their HQs to Dock 72.

A fourth-generation Rudin to work at the company, Michael Rudin joined the firm in 2008 and quickly became known as a major proptech advocate in real estate. Along with technology, Rudin focuses on new developments, capital markets, commercial leasing and sustainability, while also helping to lead the family’s alternative investing business, Rudin Ventures, which focuses on early-stage startups in the real estate technology sector.

Rudin was also involved in the creation of Rudin Management’s home-grown proptech firm, Prescriptive Data, which has developed the suite of products known as Nantum, a building management platform that uses AI and machine learning to monitor, predicate and technologically manage properties. He sits on Prescriptive Data’s board.

“Our firm has always taken a forward-looking approach to the intersection of technology and real estate, in large part due to the vision of my father Bill and our former COO, John Gilbert,” said Rudin. “In addition to utilizing technology across our portfolio for almost 30 years now, we started investing in proptech and more general ventures back in 2015. It’s been fascinating to witness the proliferation of technology and how profoundly our business and industry has been impacted by advances in proptech.”

Rudin is a member of a number of tech-related industry organizations, including The Real Estate Board of New York Real Estate Technology Committee, The Real Estate Round Table Sustainability Policy Advisory Committee, the CREtech Climate Leadership Board, and the WiredScore Advisory Board. —P.R.
