Caren Maio
President and chief strategy officer at Moved
In a real estate industry still top-heavy with old white men, Caren Maio is a standout not only because of her gender, but for the ground-up entrepreneurial experience and business savvy that have made her a successful proptech executive.
She founded and was the CEO of renter management software company Nestio and later chairwoman and founder of its offshoot, Funnel Leasing. In January, Maio was named president and chief strategy officer at Manhattan-based Moved, a three-year-old proptech startup that aims to streamline the move-in process for multifamily landlords and tenants.
Calling Moved “a category creator” for resident onboarding, Maio is in charge of sales and business development, marketing and client success, as well as people operations, all positioned to think strategically about how the product is brought to market.
Since its founding, Moved has raised a total of $6 million in funding over two rounds.
In addition, Maio is an entrepreneur in residence at Camber Creek, a RE200 Mentor at MetaProp, and a budding proptech angel investor. Her energetic mind and spirit may also lead to her becoming a venture capitalist in the future, Maio said, but she is also focused on mentoring women entrepreneurs in proptech.
“It’s an incredibly exciting time to be a proptech entrepreneur, arguably more than ever before,” Maio said. “As a member of one of the earlier vintages of proptech companies, I think there’s a tremendous opportunity to pay it forward. I have every intention to continue supporting this industry and the founders within it — as a peer, investor, mentor, or whatever role that can be played to help drive us forward.” —P.R.
