Associate at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill
In her six years at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Amy Garlock has gotten to work on some of New York City’s biggest commercial projects.
At the moment, she’s working on the renovation of the Waldorf Astoria, which will reopen in 2022 with 375 hotel rooms and 375 residential condominiums. Her team worked closely with the Landmarks Preservation Commission to restore the Art Deco hotel’s entrances, lobby and interior corridors.
“There’s a lot of idiosyncrasies of renovations that happened over time, so it was interesting to dig up the history,” Garlock said. “The foyer on Park Avenue, we knew it didn’t have the original fixture, so I was able to go into the Waldorf Astoria archive and compare historic photos. With my colleagues at SOM, we designed an updated version of that original fixture, which had an amazing backlit alabaster and gave a warm feeling to the space.”
Last year, Garlock wrapped a dramatic reconfiguring of Citi’s global headquarters in Tribeca, which encompassed the connection of two previously separate, but adjacent, office buildings, along with a new open lobby, and a complete renovation of the interiors. Her assignment involved revamping the property’s 55,000 square feet of outdoor plazas, including adding new seating, adjusting the grade of the lawn, repaving pathways, and cladding the front of the lobby with transparent, floor-to-ceiling glass. She noted that the project was challenging because the building was occupied continuously throughout the two-year construction process.
Garlock explained that a high school art teacher inspired her to become an architect. “She saw potential in me, recommended I look at some architecture history, and set me up with an internship with one of her former students who had become an architect.”
She went on to study architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a master’s in architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
When she’s not hard at work, Garlock said she likes to run, go for long walks around her neighborhood, visit museums, and cook.
