Udon Shin, a popular Japanese restaurant with only two other U.S. locations, is gearing up to open its first New York City eatery, Commercial Observer has learned.

Udon Shin has signed a 10-year, 2,500-square-foot lease at 37 West 17th Street in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, according to tenant broker Aaron Gavios of Gavios Realty Group.

Asking rent was $30,000 per month for the space previously occupied by now-closed Italian restaurant Basta Pasta.

Udon Shin originated in Tokyo but recently opened its first U.S. location in Mesa, Ariz., where its lines are “out the door,” Gavios said. Another U.S. spot is coming soon to Utah.

“We are expecting long waits and long lines when Udon Shin opens here in the Flatiron District. It should be the latest Japanese foodie sensation,” Gavios said.

Landlord the Moinian Group was represented in this deal by Samuel Chera and David Green of KSR.

“The continued interest from exciting international restaurant concepts speaks to the strength of Manhattan’s retail market and the demand for quality locations,” Green said to CO. “We believe Udon Shin will be a great addition to the neighborhood and look forward to seeing its success.”

Built in 1900, 37 West 17th Street is a seven-story office and commercial property two blocks west of Union Square Park and about six blocks south of the landmark Flatiron Building. Other tenants include acupuncture clinic the Yinova Center and British music producer De Wolfe Music USA.
