The East Village community board has released zoning information about 181 Avenue A, a seven-story mixed-use building set to rise above the recently demolished Mary Help of Christians church.
Plans call for about 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail divided into five parcels. The basement includes 8,000 additional square feet of commercial space.
Developer Douglas Steiner intends to make 22 of the building’s 158 rental apartment units affordable to impoverished families. On the more luxurious end of things, 181 Avenue A’s “amenities program” will bring in a gym, lounge, bike storage and rooftop pool and common deck. Residents will pay a fee to use those amenities, with the Inclusionary Housing tenants receiving a discount.
Curbed wrote that the seventh floor contains the building’s only four-story apartment. It also features a private terrace. Ripco listed the 181 Avenue retail space earlier this year along with 15,617-square-foot of availability at nearby 98 Avenue A. EV Grieve had previously reported that Mr. Steiner–who owns Steiner Studios in Brooklyn–hoped to demolish the Mary Help of Christians property he purchased for $41 million last year.
