tower1 Gym Coming to Old Tower Records Spot on East 4thAn apparently mysterious Equinox project has signed a lease for approximately 20,000 square feet at the old Tower Records space on East 4th Street, according to Robert K. Futterman, chairman of hegemonic real estate brokerage Robert K. Futterman & Associates. Presumably that means a gym, but somehow different from your average Equinox.

“I told them, ‘If you hire us, we’ll rent it,'” said Mr. Futterman, referring to landlord Vornado Realty Trust.

The deal encompasses most of the block-long, ground-floor retail space at East Fourth Street and Broadway, but leaves the edge of the building unoccupied. The building has been vacant since Tower Records closed in late 2006, although it has housed temporary Halloween costume shops and, in January, an art show.

Equinox and Vornado have not responded to requests for comment.
