The nonprofit entity was created to oversee the memorial through its design and fund-raising stages to, ultimately, its operation. It plans to move to the site in October.

While the conceptual plans for the memorial are taking shape—two reflecting pools will stand in the footprints of the original twin towers, a design selected from a competition that yielded 5,000 entrants from 63 countries—the memorial’s organizers are still grappling with how to present the memories, narratives and artifacts of Sept. 11. Recently, the memorial issued a global call for more stories and footage of the event—perhaps the most digitally documented of all time.
