The city’s Economic Development Corporation will begin installing greenery and seating in Downtown Brooklyn’s Fox Square in a 6,500-square-foot traffic triangle on Fulton Street at Flatbush Avenue and Hudson Avenue in a six-month project starting in August.

The construction that EDC is managing on behalf of the city Department of Transportation’s NYC plaza program will include benches, trees, water fountains and movable furniture, said Andrew Kalish, the director of cultural development at the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, the local business development corporation that’s worked in conjunction with the city agencies to set up the site.

“It’s going to be a fantastic public space; it’s going to rejuvenate the area and it’s going to be a great amenity for all the people who will be living in that area,” Mr. Kalish said, referring to the new mixed-use developments slated for the nearby Brooklyn Cultural District. “It creates a more grand entrance from Flatbush Avenue into the cultural district, and it will also provide a place for groups to do outdoor programming.”

The new plaza will adorn the now-vacant space nearby two subway stations as part of EDC’s ongoing efforts to add improved street lighting, new bus shelters, and tree-and-plant medians along Flatbush Avenue, said EDC spokeswoman Kate Blumm.

“Activation of Fox Square is another example of NYCEDC’s commitment to making Downtown Brooklyn a vibrant commercial, technological and cultural hub that also serves the needs of Brooklynites who call the neighborhood home,” said Ms. Blumm in a prepared statement. “Improved and beautified pedestrian spaces don’t just brighten the neighborhood and make it more livable—they drive business growth and job creation.”
