The City University of New York has signed a 15,000 square foot lease in Washington Heights.

The state-of-the-art space at the Inwood Center, or 5030 Broadway, is in effort of the “CUNY in the Heights” program. The joint effort between Hostos Community College and the Borough of Manhattan Community College is set to open the new location in the fall.

“We have students who come to do everything from upgrading their skills and attaining certification in specific fields to earning their GEDs and learning English as a second language,” Aldrin Bonilla, an executive director of CUNY, said in a prepared statement. “We pride ourselves on offering certifications that lead to employment in a changing economy. Some of our courses help students go straight to credit-bearing courses. They save money because they don’t have to take remedial courses.”

CUNY in the Heights, started in 2005, currently operates out of three floors at 108 Cooper Street but the space lacks air conditioning and accessibility.

“At our new address, everything will be on the ground floor,” Mr. Bonilla further noted in the statement. “We’ll have central air, which will allow us to stay open all summer and run courses six days a week all year, so we’ll be able to serve more students.”

The lease was set for fifteen years at 5030 Broadway.

Al Toscano of CUNY represented the university and in-house brokers Lenny Lazzarino and Jason Miller represented the landlord, Edison Properties. The asking rent for the unit was $45 per square foot.
